I am a mom of a 2yo living in nyc. I’m an LA girl and have *lost* my style. Please give me advice on getting out of my toddler uniform and into some better clothes. (tall, thin, not tremendously concerned about budget - I have no excuse to live in Juicy sweats and tshirts)

  2. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi Cheetah!

I love that you give style props to LA - most NYers would never! Tall, thin and no budget - my favorite kind of project.

Seriously though, I guess you’re looking for a new ‘uniform?’ It’s actually really easy to do and probably with a lot of stuff that you already have. A decent pair of jeans are such a great option to sweats and just as easy to throw on. Pair them up with cute sandals and you’re almost there. There are some really cute red, drawstring pants in one of my posts - also some links to linen pants. You can wear Capris since your tall so that gives you a ton of options right there.

Tops are the easy part especially if you’re used to wearing t-shirts. It’s just as easy to grab a cute tank, halter or babydoll for instant style. I love the simplicity of the little tie shoulder top from Old Navy (in the same post w/ the red pants) I also did a post just for tall girls that you should check out.

I’ll round up a few links to the types of things that I’ve mentioned and send them to follow. Let me know if I’m in the right ball park!

I love the tops from Delias (and you can’t beat the price!). Would they work for us shorter gals (I am 5′4)?

Also, a bra question: What to do about tops that have thin straps? The Old Navy tie at the shoulder shirt? Wear a strapless bra, a tank underneith, risk bra straps showing?

    Please advise!
    TY!

  5. kbt Says:

    hi, LASM!

You recently said you like the Maxi dress trend; can I bother you for some examples of ones you like?

And I loved the summer dresses you picked out earlier — the Shoshanna one (white w/ indian-style detailing) is now on sale if anyone else wants to bite LASM’s style. Although that’s why we’re all here, no?

  6. kbt Says:

Oh — the new site looks great, btw!

  7. kbt Says:

Whoops! Totally forgot why I came here today. I was going to ask if you had any sunglasses recommendations. Phew! Cross one item off of my to-do list.

  8. GRB Says:

Hi LASM, love this site!! I have a question about a bag - I like big bags, and am looking for a black nylon one for everyday usewith kids in tow. I love Tod’s but they are out of my price range - can you recommend anything similar, with some structure to it (not a black hole tote bag…) Thanks!

  9. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi GRB!

Check these out; I’ve included several price points and tried to exclude the ‘black hole’ options. Let me know what you think!

    Hi KBT!

I’ve included some links to maxi dresses that I like - different styles and price points. There are also a couple of Marimekko ones at H&M that I love, but I can’t post pix on my blog. I’ve seen them in person and they’re beautiful - check them out on their site.

As far as glasses go, we all know that I love the aviator (Ray-Ban classics and otherwise; Marc Jacobs makes a gorgeous gold pair) and the different takes on it. There’s a link in one of my posts to a pair. I also recommend going to a shop and trying a bunch on. I’ve often done this and have come away with something I wouldn’t normally have chosen b/c they looked good on my face.

Hope this was helpful! Let me know…

    Hi Emily!

(I think we’re dating) Yes! The Delia’s tops are for everyone. I’m also 5′4″ and they would work great on us both.

As far as the bras go, you could wear a strapless. I however, do not. I find them SUPER uncomfortable. Since I have small boobs, if the top isn’t see through I’ll wear nothing. Usually I’ll wear one of two bras in a pretty color. Both have thin straps so it doesn’t look like you’re wearing a nursing bra. I also wouldn’t choose beige. LOVE both of these; have the American Apparel one in tons of colors and the Cosabella in hot and light pink.

    Speak to you soon!

We are dating for sure, LASM! I just have so many questions! I think I get the idea on the bras. The American Apparel ones make sense, but I wonder if they would be enough support for me (i’m small, but feel like i need major support!). I’m due to go bra shopping and invest in some good ones. Thanks, again!

  13. MSL Says:

What do you think about Gypsy Daisy / Skinny Minnie / Vanilla Sugar line of tops? I really like the shirts I see here, but are the too young for a 30-something suburban mom?

  14. Diana Says:

    Hi LASM,
I have been a fan of yours from UB for years, my ds is June 2004. Over the past 18 months, I have gone from a size 14 to a size 8 (designer!). I am 5′8, have long but thick legs, little bit of a muffin top left. I have bought a ton of clothes durintg this time, some of which, despite being altered, are ill-fitting at this point (pants have too much fabric in the zipper area). I also think I have made some mistakes, buying stuff too big, too small or just wrong. Despite this, I am pretty good with pants (I have black, navy, grey, and chocolate I bought at Saks on sale or at Donna Karan or Akris sample sales). Problem is in tops and on the weekends. Jeans seem to forever slip down, even when I buy so called higher waisted styles. Do you have good suggestions for jeans and cute tops for me. Also, wondering if you think it is worth it to take in Thomas Pink button downs (both in terms of style and whether it will work). Any general advice on solidifying my wardrobe now that I am essentially where I’ll be size -wise (though I’d love to be a 6, not sure I have it in me). I have a pretty decent budget, looking to build a wardrobe that isn’t disposable. i have a lot of the things covered in your “rules,” and I never wear crocs :)! Fwiw, I have great accessories, shoes, jewelry, handbags, inherited from a very stylish grandma. Any general advice you can give me would be great, sorry to ramble on!

    Hi LASM,

Congratulations on the blog. Its about time :-) Can you recommend some pretty, cushioned flats for lots of walking this summer? Most of the ones i like are a hard sole so not practical for going on long walks, pushing a stroller. UB recommended Clarks which, as you well know, are very UNfashionable. Thanks!

  16. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi NMS!

Thank you so much - I’m happy to hear that you thought it was about time. Clarks? NO. Check out the links below to Born and Camper. I’ve been a Camper fan for years for both comfort and style. I’ve heard good things about Born as well. I just chose a few from both sites, but have a look around them - there might be something you like better. Let me know how it works out!

    Hi Diana!

So happy to hear from a UB fan! You guys have been great to me. DS #1 was March of ‘04, so I’m sure we’ve had some chats.

First of all congrats on the weight loss! That rules. You deserve some new stuff. To start, I would say yes to tailoring your TP shirts if they’re the cotton, button down ones. Beautiful, timeless and IMO worth it. If they’re the polos? Not so much. If they are polos and you’d like some new ones, I’d recommend Lacoste or Original Penguin (a.k.a Munsingwear)

The links I’ve added are to some higher waisted (but not high) jeans styles and some tops. As far as the tops go I’ve chosen some silhouettes that I like - a trapeze tank, tunics, etc. This will give you an idea of what to maybe look for. I’m a big fan of the tunic (Tory Burch does some nice ones) as they’re perfect for weekends. I’m also partial to embroidery like on the black top. I think both create kind of a nice, early seventies-ish, chic beach vibe. I also love Theory for tees.

Hope this helps - feel free to ask back and definitely let me know what you end up with!

  18. Sarah Says:

OK LASM, show me what you’ve got! I’m a mom of two, the youngest of whom I’m about to wean, which means I will sadly need to part with my wardrobe staples, my extra-long (covers the spare tire), adjustable strap, super supportive shelf bra (I’m a 32DD) nursing tank tops. I literally wear them every day under everything. I’ve scanned the web for hours and haven’t found anything even close in a non-nursing tank. Thoughts?

Also, in general, what’s a good basic every day longer cut shirt to wear out and about as a SAHM who needs longer coverage (think: squatting in sandbox w/ low rise pants) and not too tight like some of the super slim styles out there.

Answer me these two questions and I’ll be a fan for life!

  19. Sarah Says:

…oops, forgot to mention, it’s usually a bit chilly where I live, so my challenge has been finding longer cut shirts with LONG sleeves. Thanks!

  20. Diana Says:

    LASM,
Thanks so much! I really like the Theory top, and I will head over to bloomingdale’s and try some of these jeans. Don’t love the kors top, mainly b/c it looks a bit fancy for me. I am thinking of getting that Delia dress though, so cheap, looks like I can wear it in the park or to work on a hot day I’m not going to court! I actually do have a bunch of lacoste polos I bought last year at the end of the season, so I’m good to go on those. The TP shirts are the colorful button downs, not polos, wasn’t sure if you thought them too dowdy, glad you agree they can be saved. Thanks so much for all your advice, and I’m so glad you are out of bed and shopping :)! Thanks for starting the blog, now I can go on UB for HHI income polls and maybe even parenting question :)! I’ll report back after I return from shopping this weekend!

    Hi Diana!

Happy to have been able to help. Thanks so much for your well wishes - as all my UB friends know, it was a long road. Don’t forget SAHM v. WOHM! Go for those since they’re always fun ; )

    Looking forward to your report…

    LASM

  22. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi Sarah!

You’re a challenge! As far as the bras go, the only solid advice I’m able to give you (unfortunately) is to get out there and try some on. I can only say what bras I like (and I’m a 34B) since it is such a personal thing. Even if I recommended something that I thought might work, IMO you would still need to try it.

That being said I CAN tell you some good, longer cut tops to try. Romeo & Juliet Couture, Free People, C&C California and American Apparel all make longer cut tees and tanks. Your other choice so as to avoid the ‘crack in the sandbox’ look, is to check out other styles. Look at some of my previous comments about tunics and trapeze tops. These are long enough to alleviate the problem altogether.

You might also want to do a search for some higher waisted jeans the I recently posted the links to.

You may not be a fan for life, but I did my best so I hope it helps! Feedback is welcome and encouraged! GL…

    Hi LASM,
Thought I’d let you know I bought a couple of those Old Navy tie shoulder tanks you recommended yesterday on my way home from work. And the minidress sister to the theory top you linked for me: http://tinyurl.com/47e2ol was in the window of Bloomingdale’s soho yesterday. So go LASM, on target and fabulous as always! I must confess I’m posting here b/c the new UB is weirding me out a little bit and I need something to distract me as I am on this interminable conference call!
Thanks again for all your help, a-jean-shopping I will go this weekend!

  24. lastylistmom Says:

    Hey Diana!

LOVE that dress and thanks for the SoHo window update - nice to know I’m somewhat on target. I still need to pick up some of those tops - haven’t had a chance.

Okay - UB. OMG. I was on last night for a bit much to my chagrin. It’s weirding me out a lot. And not so easy on they eyes! Post here when ever you want : )

  25. Jessica Says:

    Hi LASM.
Love you site - I heard about it through UB. Could you help me find some tops - something casual that I can wear out to dinner with family or to the playground or even to my business casual work. I really need help. I am 5′ 8″ and back to my pre baby weight - usually a size 8. I have a long torso and am curvy - I’m still nursing so my boobs are a bit bigger than normal - 34C vs 34B. I want some fun things. I really need some shape to my tops because I tend to look like Mama Cass if they don’t hug me a bit.

Thanks so much for your help.

  26. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi Jessica!

WHEW! You’re hard pressed these day to find a top with a bit of shape - it’s all trapeze and tunics! Here are a few ideas to get you started. I didn’t include any tanks, but C&C California (found at revolve which is on my blogroll) and American Apparel tees and tanks are cut long. Hope this helps!

  28. Sylvia Says:

Hi LASM! You’ve helped me before on UB and I’m glad you now have this blog. Congratulations!

Anyway, I need advice on what to wear to a daytime wedding (a golden wedding anniversary, actually). Church ceremony, hotel reception. Invitation says attire: semi-formal. I am in my late 30s, 5′2″ and my problem area is my tummy. I can’t seem to lose that belly fat. I hope you can help me!

    Thanks!

P.S. I kicked the (addictive) UB habit in March. I occasionally log on when I need to post a question but I don’t stay for hours on end anymore. More so now with that unattractive format.

  29. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi Sylvia!

Not sure what your price point is, but I LOVE this outfit! I would wear it to an anniversary (I think cream is fine, since it isn’t really a wedding) in a second. With some nude ‘tummy’ Spanx, it will hold you in and give you a waist…let me know what you think…L

LASM — I know you aim to solve all the “post-baby fashion dilemnas” but how about a in the midst of baby problem? Just found out I’m pregnant with #2 (hooray!) and last go around I really struggled with that in between stage — normal clothes a bit tight, maternity clothes not quite right yet…any pointers? Decent pants/skirt recs? Thanks!

  31. lastylistmom Says:

    Congratulations MSL!

Of course I can help - or try. I can’t even remember what I wore with Z, and with R I was literally in bed for all of my pg. What I can tell you is that you’re in luck - trapeze, babydoll and empire waist tops are HUGE this season. I would start there for tops; Old Navy, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters - places where it won’t cost you a fortune. I’ve also had great luck in the past at babystyle. There are SO many different types of maternity pants/skirts now. The Bella band is one that I’ve heard is good. Also at Old Navy I know that their maternity jeans come in ‘trimesters.’ Decent quality, too. You could also go the non-maternity drawstring route, both with skirts and pants. Check out maternitymall.com too.

So happy for you! I love having two - and an easier transition from one to two, than from none to one, FWIW. Let me know what you find.

Hi, I just jumped over here from UB and I addicted. I have a lot of questions. I try to stay with style and trends but so hard with 3 boys under 3yo. I hold my own though. I have a dumb question tonight b/c it has been driving me crazy. I saw a woman who was very stylish with a chunky silver watch almost like a man’s watch. It had small rhinestones on the face with a black skull and crossbones on the face. Do you know what this is?

Thank you! That watch was exactly it. The one from Neimans. What do you think of it? I have a question, I can’t find a pair of casual pants that are comfy. They all seem to ride down on my hips. I am constantly pulling my pants up. By the end of the day, I can just slip them off without unbuttoning them, I get so frustrated. I am size 0/2. I like the capri style sense I am so petite. I know they are passe. Any advice?

    btw-this is cool site.

O.M.G. I love that watch!! Gorgeous. I would buy it in 2 seconds. Are you buying the right size pants? Maybe you need something with a bit of stretch to it - some Lycra. I also posted about some pairs of cute drawstrings. I am not a capri fan as you will soon find out ; ) Ankle length is very hot this year and way more flattering, IMO. I’m only 5′3″, and I buy whatever I want no matter what length and have it hemmed - that really opens up your options. Also you could always get a cute belt…?

I thought, “she thinks I am a real sharp dresser”. ; ) You are totally right about ankle length. I think where my problem lies is I buy the long capris and buy them too big so they will fall at ankle. The ankle length are too long. It is hard enough for me to find time to shop much less go get alterations, big mistake. I just need to break down and do it. Thanks for the advice!!!

  45. lastylistmom Says:

Hi J! DVF wrap dresses are classic, and while I don’t think that this one is ‘too’ winter-y? I definitely don’t think it’s summer-y. That being said, if what you are saying is that you don’t want to buy something and CAN you wear it? Yes, I think you can. Just w/o hose, and with a pair of high sandals to dress it up. I don’t know how dressy you have to be, but I wouldn’t choose pumps since that will just contribute to the ‘winter-y-ness’ as well as make you appear as if you are potentially on your way to the office. Maybe do a colored sandal to make it more seasonal - hot pink or kelly green would be nice…let me know how it works out!

  46. skc Says:

I really need some help! I am short (5′4″), busty (34DD) and short-waisted (breasts basically “rest” on my waist when not strapped in). Good news is that I still have my waist and wear a size 4-6. I WAH full time and have 2 preschoolers. Currnt wardrobe consists of illfitting jeans and yoga pants and an exceptional collection of J Crew t’s. I have decent shoes and casual jewelry, but i stuck on tops and bottoms. Want stylish, machine-washable items that don’t need to be ironed. TIA!

  47. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi SKC!

First of all, we need to get you into a pair of jeans that fit well. As I’ve said in previous posts, the only real way to do this is to try a bunch on; WITHOUT the kids in tow. Take an afternoon (if you can) go to Nordstrom or Bloomie’s, find a salesgirl (I find them to be very knowledgeable in both stores) and explain to her your body type. Have her pull some pairs for you to try. Being that you’re petite, don’t think about length b/c you will most likely have to hem them anyway.

As far as being short waisted, the best way to camouflage this is by either wearing a longer top that’s fitted, or a longer one that’s loose (i.e. a body-hugging tank or a cute tunic or trapeze top) People seem to be having a lot of difficulty this season w/ what to wear on top - scroll through my previous posts since I’ve addressed this issue before - there are links as well. There are a couple of links to some cute drawstring pants as an alternative to jeans or yoga pants.

Dresses are another way to go. The smocked sundresses seem like they would be good for you since they lend support up top. You could also easily wear any of the tunic dresses with a strapless bra. Skirts are great for summer - and cool when it’s a million degrees. Minis are very hot right now, although I’m not sure how you feel about wearing them. Let me know if this helps!

    I need more help…

After returning the Delia’s dress (2 different sizes, 2 different colors — I purchased/returned 3 version of the dress — the cheap zipper was driving me bonkers), I settled on the black ON dress (plus shoes and acessories) you recommend for a wedding in Santa Fe this weekend.

Can you help me figure out what to wear to the rehearsal dinner for the same wedding? So, the wedding is in New Mexico, dinner is in the mountains of Santa Fe where temps get cold-ish at night, I hear. Printed invitation says “BBQ Reception…blah blah blah…Casual Attire (Please bring a jacket).”

Any thoughts? Can I wear jeans, a cute top, heels? Do I have to wear closed-toe shoes in the mountains? How do I look cute while keeping warm but not seeming too wintery?

    Thanks-
    MSL

  49. lastylistmom Says:

Hmmm…I went to a B-B-Q rehearsal in Beaver Creek a few years back, and I’m trying to remember what I wore. Heels no, but I wouldn’t say for sure wear closed toe. You gotta think that even though it’s in the ‘mountains,’ chances are if you’re dining you’re not going to be in a harness hanging off the side of a cliff. That being said, I would wear some cute jeans (not ratty) maybe a dark wash or white. Flat sandals, dressier than flip flops, and then a nice tank or cami, over which you can throw a light jacket or cardigan. Check these out just as sort of a guideline…L

New here (YouBe) and would love some tips on navigating your site. Is there a daily post and are they in order? Feeling a bit disoriented and would love your help!

  52. lastylistmom Says:

    Welcome Kristin!

Since it’s not really a ’site’ but a blog, the navigation is kind of weird. I post daily and the posts appear in order beginning with the most recent. I keep all the comments posted since many times I include links in my responses that people refer back to. You can also use the ‘categories’ list on the side of the homepage if you’re looking for something specific. You can actually ask a question in any of the comments sections, since I can see them all. There is also a ’search’ function on the homepage which will search the posts, but not the comments. Let me know if there is anything else that I can help with - looking forward to hearing from you in the future! Feedback is welcome…

    Best,
    LASM

Oh! If you scroll down on the homepage there is a site calendar at the bottom. If you click on a particular day, the post from that day should appear…we’ll see ; )

    hello!

quick question. Just got some skinny jeans (well, between straight and skintight –I’m sure there’s a term for the difference, but I can’t recall. Whatever. Skinny.) and I’m not sure where to hem them. I’ll wear them with flats, and wasn’t sure if you still do floor-skimming with that cut.

    Thanks again!

Oh, and I got those Rogan pants from Target today. LOVE them. Was going to suggest them to your readers only to find out you already had! As usual, one step ahead.

  54. lastylistmom Says:

For sure do floor-skimming. You can even have a little ‘bunch up’ if you like. I would rec’d the latter if you plan to wear them with heels.

How GREAT do those Rogan pants fit?? I got the blackish tube top dress - SO flattering, surprisingly. Looks way more $$$ than it is.

Ok- I’ve been looking for a sneaker type shoe option- for the weenends where it’s too cold for flip flops, too casual for flats, and too warm for boots. I have an old pair of pumas I love but am done with them. I can never find anything I love. Need suggestions.

  58. pollyannacowgirl Says:

Great site! You were recommended by someone at UrbanBaby, Have you heard of a brand of jeans called “Heritage”? I tried on a pair at Bloomingdale’s and loved them - haven’t bought them yet. I came home and googled them but couldn’t find them. Other labels have a ‘Heritage’ style, but this was the actual brand name - an “H” logo on the pocket. I’m pretty sure the label inside said “Heritage New York Los Angeles”. Are you familiar with the label?

  59. MSL Says:

Thanks for the bbq rehearsal dinner suggestios!

I have to tell you that I also ordered my first metallic item — silver Havaianas flip flops…This is pretty serious stuff because I am almost religious about my flip flops and have been for at least 20 years (black Reefs only–whether they’re cool or not). We’ll see if my feet and my attitude can handle some sparkle…

    Hi Polly!

The only Heritage jeans that I know are those Japanese ones with the big, white, paint stroke looking thing on the pockets. I know that Citizens of Humanity makes some jeans with an ‘H’ on the pocket, and that Bloomie’s carries them. I also think that True Religion makes a ‘Heritage’ style. Chances are it’s one of the latter two. Curious to know what you find.

    Hey K!

So here’s the deal with me; not a fan of ‘fashion sneakers’ as the industry calls them. If I’m going to go sneaker, then I go old school. I love white Jack Purcells. I also happen to think Puma’s are great - a new pair maybe? I am presently in love w/ my Nike ‘Free’ 5.0. THE most comfy shoe I’ve ever owned and you can design your own at nike.com. If you have the right boots they don’t always scream ‘winter.’ Love motorcycle boots and - don’t be scared - cowboy boots. In the right context a pair of worn in cowboy boots can be very cool. Clogs are also great. They have the metallic ones and about a million others at tessaclogs.com. Let me know how it plays out!

    L

  65. k Says:

Yep- I’m not a fan of the fashion sneaker either. But I’m not lovin many of the Puma’s on me either. I’ll check out the Nike’s. For some reasom the Purcells do not fit my feet right. Ah- the dilemmas!!!
I’ll also check the clogs but not sure if i can rock “mommy” clogs. Where I live right now everyone at the park has clogs.
I do love boots- I lived in a pair of corso como black totally flat no heel boots all winter. It was the closest thing to being in flip flops(my all time fav!) Thanks- so good to have a random person to bounce ideas off of. I also love the cute little red dress you suggested the other day!!

  66. pollyannacowgirl Says:

LASM: Not like it’s important, but… I went back for the jeans today and they’re “Habitual”, not “Heritage”. DUH! I’m turning into my mother!

Well, I bought them (30% off!) and I love them. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. *blows a kiss*

I am willing to spend some $$ (up to 300) but am against anything with the logo splashed all over it. Thanks for any help you can give me.
    S

  70. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi S!

$300 is a great budget for a new bag, especially since there are so many discount designer bags available now. I’m not sure what your style is (besides logo-less) but Banana Republic has some well made, classic handbags. Here’s a link to one I particularly like within your price range.

    http://tinyurl.com/6o8j9m

I also checked out overstock.com and bluefly.com. They have some great selections under $300 such as Cole-Haan, Rafe, Furla, Kooba and Linea-Pelle. At either site search handbags and then click on sort by price, that way it’s easier to weed out what you don’t want. Let me know if you need more info - good luck!

  71. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi H!

Ella Moss for sure isn’t under 40 bucks, but there are some decent alternatives. I just bought a few dresses at Target that are a comparable cotton knit material. They have a ton of different styles, some not so dissimilar to EM. While there are more choices online, here is a link to the one that I purchased. (Try to ignore the craptastic photography - it’s actually cute)

    http://tinyurl.com/58t5bu

If you can get to a store and try some on - great. If not go to target.com, click on women’s then on casual dresses. For around 20 bucks, you can’t go wrong. There’s also a cute navy blue Converse (I know, I know) dress that I’ve seen in person - perfect for the playground! Also check out Forever 21 online. They too carry what appear to be some Ella Moss knockoffs.

  79. lastylistmom Says:

    Okay NMS…

…you may have finally stumped me. I’m almost at a loss! My guess is that it’s difficult to find since that commercial has been running for a while. It’s most likely several seasons back, or about a year old if I had to guess. I know that the red and white dress in the same commercial is Gucci, and going by that I’m assuming that the white dress is also higher end. It feels like Chloe or Philip Lim, but I came up empty handed there as well. The reality is that it could be from anywhere, any designer, any era, which makes it tough. For all we know they rented it someplace random…but I’m not giving up yet! Keep me posted.

    LASM

  80. NMS Says:

aaaah :-( oh well, you gave it a shot. i figured it would be a more expensive brand because the michael kors one looks like a knock off of the commercial dress, whatever it is. ive even emailed cotton but no answer….yet. will let you know if anything comes up. thanks

  81. lastylistmom Says:

The MK dress totally looks like a knock off. Had I never seen the commercial one I would think it’s adorable. I have still not yet given up hope - too funny, I e mailed them as well! I have a friend who knows EVERYTHING about clothes. We’ll see. Keep me posted if you get any info.

  82. Diana Says:

Okay, I may be crazy but I actually called Cotton’s marketing dept here in NYC today. The woman told me that she would email me because it was not listed in the usual place! Anthropolgie has great dresses but very pricey and don’t seem very comfortable. Any ideas?

  85. lastylistmom Says:

    Hey Bonez!

Did you end up getting that watch? Loved it. Dear LASM,
I used to read your posts on the old UB. It’s great to have found your blog.

I’m fat. 3 pregnancies in a row (the last with twins) has left me with 40 lbs. to lose (don’t ask how many i’ve lost already). And i still have to get dressed in the morning, and i’m tired of looking like a fat frump. Wear a size 12/14, and i’m 5′10″. Can you help me put together some summer NY SAHM fat-42-fearing-frumpy outfits?

    all best to you,

  90. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi Cassandra!

So glad you found my blog! I always love hearing from people who knew me from UB. 5′10″ and a 12/14 is hardly fat, and I would love to help you put together some outfits that make you feel NOT frumpy. Let me know what you like (pants, dresses, shorts, etc) and don’t like, in which areas you need the most help, and what your price point is, that way I’ll know where to start. Don’t worry - we’ll find some cute stuff! Looking forward to hearing from you…

    Best,
    LASM

P.S. We can correspond through comments on this thread - kind of weird, but the best way until my site is up.

  91. Cassandra Says:

Fantastic. Can’t wait to see your site!

I’m pretty evenly larded all over (to clarify, i’m an old navy 12/14, not designer. Do they even go that high?). But my worst feature is fat, short legs, so I try to stick to wide-legged pants. Though in terrible heat I may resort to an a-line skirt.

I’m still nursing the twins, so dresses don’t work. And due to nursing I’m still pretty big on top, so finding tops that are not too Eileen Fisher tentlike but also not indecent is actually the hardest part for me.

In the rush of kids I haven’t paid attention to style very much so updating accessories would be helpful, too. I walk all over so your suggestion about Born and Camper flat shoes was invaluable.

You are a godsend. You will make millions with your site. Thank you!

  92. Cassandra Says:

Oh, I forgot. On price point, I don’t want to go crazy as I am still losing (though slowly) and plan to go down another 2-3 sizes to get back to where I was before baby madness started. Spendier things will wait until i’m back in an 8.

  93. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi Cassandra!

Great - I’m on it. Give me a day or two, and you’re SO welcome. Don’t worry, I too have short legs and 2 kids under four…been there!

  94. lastylistmom Says:

    Cassandra!

Got a minute while baby is sleeping and his bro is at school. So…lots of links! Let me start by saying that Born and Camper are my faves for comfort. Check those out first - also be sure and check not only my posts, but the links that I’ve included for others in various comments sections - there’s some good stuff in there as far as cheap, pretty jewelery, etc.

That being said, I’ve included a bunch of stuff below; some great linen pants (I own the Merona ones from Target and LOVE them - more so even than more expensive pairs I have) and a few really cute eyelet A-line skirts.

As far as tops go, I’ve chosen several that aren’t too ‘boob-y’ and that would work with a strapless bra or one with pretty straps. I included one tunic but do a search (online and within my blog) as this is a really current and cool (temp wise) style that would work well for you.

In addition to my former ‘comfy’ shoe suggestions, I’ve included some SUPER cute silver sandals that don’t look like they fall into the ‘comfort’ category. I also chose the Nike Mary Jane’s b/c my friend had them on the other day and they looked adorable! Let me know if this was helpful and if you’d like more suggestions. Hopefully I’m in the right ballpark…L

So I am thinking a cute a-line skirt, but beyond that, I am lost! Any tips you have would be great. I need shoes too!

    Thank you!

  96. m Says:

lasm please help - i need a spanx tutorial! when you rave about spanx, are you talking about the tops or the bottoms or both together (and are certain styles that are better than others)? how do you stop the tops from rolling up and the bottoms from rolling down (and thus creating multiple muffin tops) - sizing up or down, doesn’t seem to help. finally, how does one cope in spanx during the hot, sticky summer months?

thanks so much, after 2 kids, i am desperate to reign in the poochiness!

    m

  97. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi M!

Too funny with the multiple muffin tops - been there. The first thing I can tell you is that you can’t wear Spanx with every single outfit - some for the reasons you mentioned above. The main thing that Spanx will do, is smooth you out in a skirt or form fitting pants w/o creating panty lines.

My problem areas (amongst others) are my butt and thighs. I own the first two links below - one for skirts and one for pants. I can only wear the ’shorts’ ones w/ certain pairs of pants - if the pants are too thin, you can see the lines. These also don’t roll b/c they are the ones that come up only to your natural waist, as opposed to all the way up.

The third link is to that kind - you can see that they attach to your bra to keep rolling in check, but I have no personal experience with this style. IMO looks like it could work! That being said I LOVE my ’shorts’ ones. I’m on the cusp between small and medium and mine are medium. I think that helps w/ the lines showing. Also when you try them on, wear something that you would need them for, so you can see how they’ll work with that outfit.

Being that the thermometer in my car today read 115 when I picked Z up from school, I don’t wear them a lot in the summer. I will at night if something is form fitting in hopes that it will cool down - otherwise I suck it up and sweat. Sounds fun, huh?

Hope this helped - let me know if you have more questions…

    Hi S!

Of course I’ll bear with you - thanks for posting! So it sounds like we kind of have the same body, except I’m not quite sure of your size or height. I posted some links below - to dresses - and here’s why; summer skirts this season are horrible! Nothing that I would say is flattering for our body type since dirndl and minis are hot. I also think that A-line can look matronly.

What I did find are some cute dresses that will hide your bad points and emphasize the good. Bear in mind that unless you’re six feet tall, the dresses will be longer on you than in the pix - I also didn’t choose any minis. I think these are all bbq friendly w/o being too dressy.

I also thought about including some linen pants and tunics, but wasn’t sure how hot it is where you are. As far as shoes go, I included two flat pairs of metallic sandals - either would work with any of the dresses. You can also kind of use them as a guide to peruse other similar styles that you might like more.

My pick is the Kookai dress. I think it’s so modern and comfortable looking; you can dress it up or down in the future depending on the shoes you wear. Let me know what you think and if you have other questions.

    Hi,

My brother is getting married on the lawn at my parents summer home on LI July 4th weekend. The bride is wearing a J Crew wedding gown, and it will be a fun, casual beach wedding. Believe it or not, I still don’t have a dress. Any suggestions? As for shoes, do I go for a wedge? I can’t imagine anything else on the lawn. Thanks!

  106. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi Abby!

Here’s a start; let me know if I’m in the ballpark. Also a wedge is fine, but if it were me I’d go w/ a fun, dressy, flat sandal - much more comfy!

    Hi LASM,

You’re the best, thanks. I didn’t love any of the dresses for this event, but you gave me some great ideas that I can work with. The trapeze dresses seem too young for me. I’m a 42 year old personal trainer. I like to show my arms and legs and like an a-line above the knee skirt. I’m looking for something comfortable, but special since I am the sister of the groom. I’l keep checking the blog. I’m so happy I found you!

  108. m Says:

hi lasm - thanks for the help re. the spanx. i already had the “shorts” style at home so after reading your post (gleefully, i might add, since now i can blame the rolling on the spanx and not me!) i tried them on with a few things and suspect they work better for dressier pants and not jeans (does this sound right?). for jeans i find the invisibellas work better, and the top and boy short are just a cute set (a bonus in the world of minimizers!) but since the material is thicker, its not really a summer option (that’s why i was asking about spanx). also i have not tried the longer style so not sure about the line on the leg issue. here’s the link so you can check them out: http://www.barenecessities.com/search.asp?search=invisibellas&ft=1

    Hi,

I’m the one looking for the dress for my brother’s July 4 wedding. I think I’d like to wear one of the long “day gowns”. I’m on a budget and would be thrilled with any recommendations you may have. TIA

  110. lastylistmom Says:

    Hey Abby!

Are you talking about Maxi dresses? If so I included a couple in my original post. Let me know if those are dressy enough or if you need something dressier. I was under the impression that it is a fairly casual wedding. Also let me know your price point specifically…

    L

  111. lastylistmom Says:

    Thanks M!

I’ll for sure check out the link. Also YES on the not good with jeans…they ‘peek’ out over the waist band 9 times out of 10 AND roll - a lovely combo. Some others I have that are decent are Body Slimmers by Nancy Ganz. Similar to Spanx and they sell them at Loehmann’s. I was there yesterday - scored some cute dresses and great stuff for the boys. So random; my Loehmann’s has amazing kid’s stuff! Anyhow thanks again and glad to have been of help as always…

  112. Abby Says:

    Hi,

I guess I am talking about Maxi dresses. I didn’t know that was what they’re called. I didn’t love the 2 in your original post, although I really appreciate your help. I’d like a dress which gives some shape. I’d also like to stay under $200 if possible. The question is, will this type of dress be in style after this summer?

  113. lastylistmom Says:

The Maxi will for sure be around, but even if you decide you don’t like it long, you can always have it cut and hemmed. Let me see what I can find for that $…

  114. lastylistmom Says:

    Hey Abby!

So here’s the deal; I think that what I’ve posted below is more what you’re looking for. That being said, these are actually gowns, and therefore much dressier than a Maxi which is usually worn during the day or to a more ‘lawn-y’ event in the summer evenings. Maxis are traditionally not as form fitting either. Even though I’ve chosen gowns, I think that the ones here would be appropriate for your brother’s wedding. Most are also within your price range. I would still go w/ the flat dressy sandal as opposed to a wedge - could be tricky on the grass or beach. Let me know how it pans out…

    Hi LASM:

Thank you for all the links! I like the first dress from Bloomingdale’s. You don’t think it will be too dressy? I will also have two little ones with me (forgot to mention that). As for my stats: I am 5′5″ about 133ish (still working on the baby weight). It will probably be in the 80s where I am (suburban NJ).

Thanks again for the help! By the way, I found your site through Urbanababy (actually Youbemom).

    Scout

  116. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi Scout!

Are you kidding me with working on the baby weight?!? Those are fantastic stats post two kids. (Don’t believe the YouBe hype) Nice that you found me there - I have a bunch of readers from the old UB.

I think that dress is perfect! No too dressy at all, but the good news is that if you wanted it to be at another time, it could be depending upon which accessories you choose. I like it best in white, but w/ two little ones in tow I would opt for cobalt. Just team it up with some casual flip flops or sandals. It’s also flattering and forgiving (not that you need it) as well as keeping you cool. Let me know how it is when you order it.

    Always happy to help!

hi lasm - do you have any suggestions for cute summer t-shirt type tops that won’t make me look pregnant but can hide a squishy-ish middle? i am petite (ok short - 5′0), short waisted and pretty small up top. looking for something that’s appropriate for the playground but makes me look like i still care. thanks.

  118. Abby Says:

    Hi LASM,

Do you have suggestions for shorts. I like my legs and like the shorter cuff style they’re showing, but most of them seem too short. I’ve checked ON and the other usual places (target, gap). I guess I’m looking for something between a bermuda and short shorts. TIA

Also, what’s your take on the denim short that’s almost to the knee, pretty tight and with a cuff (kind of like what the girl wore in Dirty Dancing)? Any suggestions for those?

I’m loving your site! Keep up the great work.

  119. lastylistmom Says:

    Hi Abby!

Thanks so much for the kind words - I’m happy you’re loving it! So my take on the Dirty Dancing shorts? It hasn’t been long enough to bring that back, IMO. It takes me right to the time that Madonna and Sandra Bernhart wore them w/ the white tees on Letterman. Entirely up to you, however. If you have a great ratty pair of cutoffs that are well worn in a chic hippy way? I say go for it. Here are some links to shorts in the length you asked about that I think are super cute. Let me know how it works out.

    Hi Lasm,
You site is great! I have been hoping we would be on yoube at the same time all day. I recently got a promotion to senior management at a firm that i joined right out of college 10 years ago. In that time, i’ve married and had a ds. I always wear gap/br business casual slacks and tops. I think its finally time to dress the part, but don’t have a lot of money right now. Can you suggest some fun stables i should add to my wardrobe in the meantime to look the part? Thanks in advance!!!!
